Rogier Karskens

Attorney

Background

I graduated in 2001 and subsequently started worked as an attorney in Utrecht at a firm now known as De Advocaten van Van Riet. I began working for entrepreneurs and as a trustee in bankruptcy cases. When I heard about BVDV’s initiative in 2006, I felt thrilled to become a part of that new initiative and to become an entrepreneur myself, in part due to my old firm’s original structure. I subsequently joined BVDV in January 2007. It was at BVDV that I developed my insolvency and corporate law practice.

I enjoy speaking to entrepreneurs and try to put myself in their position and see through their business lens. Whatever (legal) issue I spar with entrepreneurs about, for me the challenge always lies in finding the least restrictive solution. After all, the show must go on!

Key areas of focus

My practice consists of:

  • acting as counsel to entrepreneurs in legal disputes;
  • supervising the restructuring of companies (in dire straits);
  • acting as a trustee in bankruptcy cases and as an administrator in moratoria on payments;
  • advising and litigating on cases regarding financing and securities.

Specialist associations and additional activities

I graduated from the Grotius specialisation programme in insolvency law with honours and am a member of Insolad, the Dutch Association of Insolvency Lawyers. I’m active as a deputy justice in the court of appeals of ‘s-Hertogenbosch. In addition, I teach at the NVM/Som educational institute and edit judicial decisions for publication in the journal Rechtspraak Insolventie (RI, Insolvency Jurisprudence). From 2012 up to mid-2017, I was a member of the Council of the Netherlands Bar Association (formerly: the Supervisory Council) of the district of Midden-Nederland. I am an avid bird watcher.
